Rocky Run is short and hand-built, which changes how you should practise it. Unlike an endless game, every obstacle is fixed. You are not training reaction speed; you are learning a route.

Walk it before you run it

The most underused technique in platformers: on a first attempt, walk. Move slowly to the edge of every gap and only jump when you can see the far platform clearly.

This costs nothing — there is no timer — and it converts the level from a blur into a list of specific jumps. On your second pass, you are not reacting; you are executing.

Commit early, commit fully

The classic platformer death is not a mistimed jump, it is a half-jump: the player taps late, realises mid-air, and releases the key. Released keys cut horizontal speed, and the jump dies halfway.

Rules that remove half-jumps:

  1. Press the direction before the jump, not with it.
  2. Hold the direction through the entire arc. Let go only after landing.
  3. When a jump feels too long, the fix is a different takeoff point — not an early release.

Stomping is a tool, not a bonus

The grumpy blobs are not just enemies. A stomp bounces you upward, which means a blob under a high ledge is a free extra jump. Several sections that look impossible are designed exactly this way: the intended route passes through a blob.

So before calling a ledge unreachable, look below it. If there is a blob under the approach, the level is telling you something.

The coin rule

Coins mark the safe path most of the time — but not always. Some sit above pits purely as bait, and grabbing them mid-jump is what turns a comfortable arc into a short one.

Practical reading: coins that continue your current arc are free; coins that require you to stretch or redirect are traps. In a three-level game, finishing with fewer coins is strictly better than dying at 95%.

Levels are conversation. Coins are one voice, and it lies sometimes.

The last flag

Levels end at a flag, and the area right before it is usually the easiest — which is exactly where runs die, because players relax, stop holding the direction, and walk into the last pit.

Decide now: the jump discipline ends when you touch the flag, not when you can see it. Every year of platform games, in one sentence, is that rule.
